Multimeter uses

Hi all

Are there any decent courses to take to help a complete novice learn how to use a multimeter to diagnose boiler faults?

but john reginalds book on combis or central heating, they are comprehensive in how to use them

that's actually a good way of learning, you'll learn quicker

It can be, it could also be dangerous lol!

A quick watch of the basics on a YouTube video would be a good starter tho

there are a lot more people out there with a lot more know how than me and were just waiting for them, in the mean time boilers are largly switches eg overheat stat switches can be tested in continuity or loads fan gas valve etc which can be tested in resistance so all of your testing is done with power off start safe stay safe and wait for someone to point the way

basicly you need to know two things how to test voltage and how to check for continuity voltage is done live and continuity dead

I would say that unless you have at least a basic knowledge of electrical theory, use of a multimeter then you should not attempt to use it on mains voltages.

You could get an electric shock and/or cause damage to appliancees/ electrical installation.

I had a good kick along time ago which is why I've always been reluctant to mess with electrics. However I would love to be able to fault diagnose boilers.

Just need to get back on the bike and I've had too many to count the best one is when I was young and the back off a plug top broke off and I wanted to use the plug/appliance, so I just pushed it in with my palm of my hand but forgot to switch the plug off had a track mark and a mark where the pins where for a good few months after

Did the Baxi 3 day Combi fault finding and multimeter course last year. Brilliant and not product related, learnt loads. Would recommend

Ideal do a free course called essential electrics, it's basic stuff but there's not much to it anyway. 3 day baxi course is good and you can go back and do the advanced fault finding after you've completed the 3 day course. if you do the baxi course then make sure you ask for the 10% discount as it's usually always on offer

How long is the Baxi advanced fault finding course, did the 3 day at their Warwick centre?

It's just 1 day, but they said you had to wait a month or so to put in practice what you learnt on the 3 day course. I done the course in the Warrington centre so I presume they would have it in Warwick aswel. All you do is spend the full day fault finding on boilers but they put harder faults
