multimeter

A multimeter is a measuring instrument that can measure multiple electrical properties. A typical multimeter can measure voltage, resistance, and current, in which case it is also known as a volt-ohm-milliammeter (VOM), as the unit is equipped with voltmeter, ammeter, and ohmmeter functionality. Some feature the measurement of additional properties such as temperature and volume.
Analog multimeters use a microammeter with a moving pointer to display readings. Digital multimeters (DMM, DVOM) have numeric displays and have made analog multimeters obsolete as they are cheaper, more precise, and more physically robust than analog multimeters.
Multimeters vary in size, features, and price. They can be portable handheld devices or highly-precise bench instruments. Cheap multimeters can cost under US$10, while laboratory-grade models with certified calibration can cost over US$5,000.

    Question about a multimeter

Some years ago I used a multimeter when working for British Gas, which apparently approximately 700 people apply for each engineering job advertised, no doubt most if not all the muppets who replied to my last post about a meter also appiled but didn't make the grade. Any way, this meter was...

    Need a Multimeter

Evening. I'm looking for a new multi meter, the only feature it has to have is what I think is called range finding. What I don't want it to do is trip the MCB when I test for volts but its set on ohms. Not looking for anything more than that, what do you suggest? Thanks

Multimeter & Single Wire (DUMB QUESTION ALERT)

Can you test voltage on a single wire using a multimeter? If so, how? I know this sounds like a dumb question but, say I want to find out the common wire on a cylinder stat. Do I just put one probe on the single wire? (I don't have anything I can test here at home...)
