Okay, my fault, but I'm fitting a combi boiler in a renovation property & noticed today the new owners have a pre payment card meter! ... No card!!!

Is there a way to get it to give me gas for my commissioning etc? Or can I buy a pre payment card?

An alternative, can I make a meter bypass for this purpose? I see them on eBay, but will a regular merchant hold bits to make such a connector!

Its all temporary just so I can test & tightness etc, the customer has contacted gas supplier for new meter, but that could take weeks!

thanks for any advice!

that's exactly the point.

this is why this private forum is here to discuss possibilities and cross knowledge by giving the best advice.

whether you have the incline to do 'what is possible' thats another matter for the individual to decide.

right or wrong is not the point! it is nothing different in a colleague asking you at work tomorrow, you would not just blank them, you would share your thoughts and concerns.
That they don't know about bypassing meter etc when they are gsr ? Doesn't take much to be one

I wouldn't want to belittle the bloke and suggest that he doesn't realise that would be theft but he has got him self in a bit of a spot by the sounds of it.

It's a bit harsh to jump on the guy for asking a question. I would just look at buying a meter to keep as a spare if I were you. I think BES sell them.

forgive me but arent these nice card meters tamper proof, ie dont go moving them around or when the custard gets their card the meter will be useless till the supplier pops out to reset it, and your name will be mud.

Good point.

I would be a bit concerned that if my customer can't afford gas, then my bill may go unpaid! Or is this mainly HA work?

You've had some answers, right or wrong make your own decision or send the householder up to the shop for a tenner card.
If it is housing association stuff don't be stupid.
Get some arrangement made with whoever you are working for a price to cover your aborted calls because you will get plenty of that.

They've changed them now so that they don't trip out so easily, if at all. Too many call outs to reset them before.

To my knowledge at least if these are getting used to recover a debt then they get put in a special mode where you rather would lock them. You could get yourself a bit in trouble playing about with it as you seem not to know the history and the setting of the meter.

If it is a HA the responsible agent/manager usually comes forward quickly with a solution to prevent further costs.

As for the theft thingy, once caught they usually assume you have used it since the last check/meter reading by themselves and average the usage.
It is your part to proof different then. You could try by videoing during the time of bypassing as a preventive measurement. Still would get charged as theft but the claim for the stolen gas could get reduced.
Dunno how easy Gas Safe does take that then? Worth trying?

Word of mouth can be brilliant but if your customer spreads word of this it could as well go wrong.

Add on: Not so funny episode to think about, a company in my area had installed a few months ago a new gas appliance. Now there was an accident. From rumours totally unrelated to the new installation. But. That still means that now even the new installation got checked by inspectors, any potential flaws would be reported to Gas Safe. And likely lead to increased check ups/reports.

You never know before. Cutting corners can become quite costly in the aftermath. At least this company has spent many unpaid man hours on answering questions and hunting paperwork to proof their procedures.

This is no assumption that faults have been found on the new installation. Just a hint how tricky things can be.

If there is a known occupant/buyer/tenant for the property then they need to contact the supplier and either arrange a prepayment to credit meter swap or obtain a gascard and put credit on the meter.

Other than that ,you could leave new boiler disconnected ,label it as requiring commissioning and come back when the gas is on

The bypasses sold on ebay are being manufactured for the nefarious purpose of encouraging people to steal gas. They are not bona fide pieces of equipment.

Abstraction of gas other than via a meter is theft of gas.

all yer have to do is ring up trasco, tell them that you have only just moved into house and have not gas for hw/heating and that you have children. They will be out in a few hours and give you £5 free

"transco" dont respond to calls to meters. Meters belong to meter asset managers and calls for meterwork must be routed through the gas supplier. "transco" front end only responds directly to gas emergency calls.
