Hello my name is Michael I am 27 years old, I have recently left the RAF after 8 years. I am currently working as a care worker at the moment but whilst I was on resettlement I attended a short course on plumbing that lasted a week. I really enjoyed the course and did learnt a lot more than I initially thought. I realise that the classroom is nice and safe with the teacher watching you i understand that day to day plumbing isn't like anything in the class room. I do however believe with the skills i learnt in the RAF (mainly determination and a passion to succeed) i can go on to become a plumber.

Anyway back to the main topic, which is, am looking to become a fully qualified plumber, but being 27 I don't qualify for a apprenticeship so I'm looking for some advice on which is the best way to go about, is there anyone on here that has been though the same situation or something similar that could offer some advice?

Any information would really be appreciated.

thanks
Michael

have a look at the multitude of previous posts on this subject first, then pop back with any queries. It can be done, but there are many traps to catch you on the way.

I've been in similar situation though my ex job as office admin didnt bestow me with any skills or passion lol

Firstly you aren't too old to be an apprentice, you are too old for some funding apprentices get thats all. First step make a CV one page will do, briefly write down any relevant experience imagined or otherwise, if you have a driving license write in big bold letters plus if you have a motor BIG bonus (if not get driving licence asap its essential). Go online and look up all local colleges that do NVQ plumbing apprenticeships get in touch with their apprenticeship co-ordinators dont waste your time with receptionists or anyone else. Leave your CV with them, get their details and pester them at least once a week.

At the same time use your friends family to find a plumber, maybe a friend of a friend or even a regular plumber someone uses, get in touch say you want to see what its like ask for no money dont even mention apprenticeship first, make a good impression then you can start asking for things in return.

You will hear "you are too old" its b*llocks you are too to be fully funded, you'l have higher fees as an older apprentice but still nowhere near as high as these two week gas ticket miracle companies leaving you broke and with no skills. Plus as an older apprentice especially if you have a car you will probably earn loads more than any 18 year old apprentice.

Best of luck to ya hope you'l get there!

Where are you based? There are a few companies advertising for staff on facebook. A couple in Essex and one over in west London.

Hi, Can anyone advise as to why the cold water to my bathroom keeps airlocking? This originally happened about 12 months ago and has happened 3-4 times since. It’s an upstairs bathroom, fed from a tank in the attic. The tank is about 8 Meters away and feeds a bath, sink and toilet. The tank...

I want to reconnect some outbuildings to an existing water supply. The supply pipe is old 22mm MDPE and buried for a fair distance so not going to dig it up and replace it 😬. Question is can I use normal 22mm plumbing push-fit connectors to make the connection as finding 22mm MDPE fittings...
