Hemp and PTFE on iron..

just for my own interest this.

I've always jointed screwed iron on heating systems with hemp and paste (boss white, green, jet blue, blah blah) but I worked with a guy recently that was running hemp onto the thread as normal but then adding a couple of wraps of PTFE, no paste.
I've never come across this before, anyone been taught to do it this way ?

Never seen it done this way before, dont use hemp anymore we just use locktite 55.

yea I use 55 for smaller stuff but I had to go and change a load of leaking fittings that had been done like this and they were 2" so I used hemp and paste.

Pretty sure its good for upto 4" pipe work so maybe it wasnt made in right the 1st time!

Knew a guy who used to put immersion heating elements with a few twists of ptfe and boss white said he never had a problem getting them out next time round....regards Turnpin

No bud its one or the other i am with the others guys hemp and boss white or locktite 55 , only use ptfe for rad tails aav's thats it cheers kop

I have never come across this before. I don't personally like ptfe and more often then not use hemp and jointing compound as necessary.

yea its an odd one.. the fella that does it is very skilled and knowledgeable for sure but did his training in eastern europe, perhaps its common over there, I didnt ask, probably should have.

I just use loctite 55 on everything , its the dogs !

yea, I dont plan on changing

I like using hemp, reminds me of the 80's when all I did was commercial screwed iron

PTFE is fine for most threads providing you use the right amount. And Boss White will lubricate the joint which no doubt helps get more jointing into the threads as well as help seal.
I don't like Hemp (Flax) as it makes joints difficult to take apart
