Hi all , I am new to this site ! I have been out of our industry for two years whilst working in Australia and i am just getting back into the swing of things , with this new Eco scheme I just need to get my confidence back up to get a job basically .
I am looking for some on advice on how to convert an open vented system to a sealed system . If you can tell me what pipes I need to cap off and link , what I should look out for etc it would be great if someone can just advise me on how to do the conversion , I have an idea but don't want to mess it up when it comes round to me doing one

thanks very much much and I will look forward to your replies

Welcome bark.
I'm not so sure croppie will accept such advice being given over an open forum.
Though you're dealing with the wet section of the installation, the whole setup will involve gas at some stage.
I'll let croppie decide.
RU converting to a Combi boiler or just want to make the system sealed as opposed to being open vented?

So how long were you a plumber before your two years out?

2 years then got made redundant so moved to Aus and did machanical pipe fitting . The company I worked for previous we mainly did bathrooms , I have my gas safe so was doing landlord safety checks etc , I didn't get much experience on the installation side so that's why I asked for advice on here ,
basically want to convert to a combi boiler and just want to get a bit of advice on what to cap of etc

I understand as I say I am new to this site and just want advice on the wet stuff , hot and cold feed flow and return , just want to know what I cap of when taking the cylinder out etc

Its like riding a bike. You never forget. If you could do it before you can still do it. Just do a bit of homework and get a pencil and bit paper out and draw it.

Cheers for the advice , just need to get my confidence back that's all

Why does it worry you ????? Just asking for a bit of advice on a plumbers forum as I am new to the industry and don't have a lot of experience in the installation side of the industry ?

Cheers for the answers , big help !!! Was just after a bit of guidance from experienced plumbers to get myself back on my feet , wasn't looking for sarcasm

you begin to understand why I said initially that croppie wont allow it? In my opinion, if you know your central heating layout (as tamnz says), you should be able to work out what can and cannot be removed to create a sealed system.

So from the posts I have read so far in this thread the OP is gas safe registered, has worked in the industry predominately fitting bathrooms, but also carrying out domestic gas safety certification and has been pipe fitting abroad. The Op is looking for advice on converting a conventional (assumed) open vent system probably consisting of a heat only boiler, pump, 3 port, cylinder and cold water header tanks to a combi based unvented system. Most of the posters here want to offer advice and help when able. The dificulty on the open forum is the information can be misused misinterpereted or encourage those without the relevant skills to attempt such changes. I think some of the posts in response to the Op's question are concerned that you are seeking direction and dont know where to start. It is not a complicated procedure and may well be within your capabilities as a plumber. Any conversion of this kind becomes quite site specific and so a general description of what needs to be cut out, capped or coupled, may not be enough to allow you to complete a conversion properly and above all else safely. Op do you have your g3? Its not required for combis but almost all of the principles apply. Think about the system as it exists now what the function of each element in it is and how that function will be performed in the new system. For instance how is thermal expansion dealt with in an openvent? How is hot water provided? How is cold water supplied to outlets? How is hot water heated and how is the cold water that is heated supplied to this mechanism? I dont want to be patronizing but if you are going to carry out conversions of these systems you need to have an understanding of both systems that if you have you probably shouldn't need to ask your original question.

Just do a bit of homework and get a pencil and bit paper out and draw it.

The best advice i can offer and the most useful to you to get your head around things.

Another bit of advice. Don't jump in and say you can do something you can't. You will be quickly found out. Be honest.
