overflowing
In computer programming, an integer overflow occurs when an arithmetic operation attempts to create a numeric value that is outside of the range that can be represented with a given number of digits – either higher than the maximum or lower than the minimum representable value.
The most common result of an overflow is that the least significant representable digits of the result are stored; the result is said to wrap around the maximum (i.e. modulo a power of the radix, usually two in modern computers, but sometimes ten or another radix).
An overflow condition may give results leading to unintended behavior. In particular, if the possibility has not been anticipated, overflow can compromise a program's reliability and security.
For some applications, such as timers and clocks, wrapping on overflow can be desirable. The C11 standard states that for unsigned integers modulo wrapping is the defined behavior and the term overflow never applies: "a computation involving unsigned operands can never overflow."On some processors like graphics processing units (GPUs) and digital signal processors (DSPs) which support saturation arithmetic, overflowed results would be "clamped", i.e. set to the minimum or the maximum value in the representable range, rather than wrapped around.
Hello. I returned home yesterday to find an Anglian Water engineer had put a card through our door explaining that due to a substantial increase in meter readings from last, they suspect there is a leak. I called Anglian Water back and they confirmed the engineers visit and findings and asked...

My header tanks keeps overflowing. I have replaced the ball valve and checked this several times for leaks to which there is none. So I can confirm that it is not the Ball valve. The tank...

Hi all,
Found these forums whilst searching and I thought I'd stop by and ask here. I've got the sound of running water from the pipes in the house, no taps on - central heating pressure is fine and no (visible) leaks.
I've tried shutting the supply down and running everything off, no joy...

The problem started when the overflow pipe from the header tank started pouring down the exterior walls of the house. We'd had a new boiler installed and the system flushed so the overflow left a dark red streak down the wall.
Called back the plumber to try and fix the problem his solution was...

Hi there
I'm new to the forum and have a question.
Have installed a new ballcock in an F & E cistern. Can't seem to get the level right for where the float should sit. Have left it low on the stem, although water still tricking out of overflow.
Any ideas?

Got called out yesterday to a system overflowing. It was one of those DIY efforts - there were 6 header tanks / cisterns in 3 loftspaces. The main DHW header consisted of 2 20-gallon ones linked together (with one of them stagnant). There was an oil boiler with indirect cylinder at one end of...
