loud noise
An equal-loudness contour is a measure of sound pressure level, over the frequency spectrum, for which a listener perceives a constant loudness when presented with pure steady tones. The unit of measurement for loudness levels is the phon and is arrived at by reference to equal-loudness contours. By definition, two sine waves of differing frequencies are said to have equal-loudness level measured in phons if they are perceived as equally loud by the average young person without significant hearing impairment.
The Fletcher–Munson curves are one of many sets of equal-loudness contours for the human ear, determined experimentally by Harvey Fletcher and Wilden A. Munson, and reported in a 1933 paper entitled "Loudness, its definition, measurement and calculation" in the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America. Fletcher–Munson curves have been superseded and incorporated into newer standards. The definitive curves are those defined in ISO 226 from the International Organization for Standardization, which are based on a review of modern determinations made in various countries.
Amplifiers often feature a "loudness" button, known technically as loudness compensation, that boosts low and high-frequency components of the sound. These are intended to offset the apparent loudness fall-off at those frequencies, especially at lower volume levels. Boosting these frequencies produces a flatter equal-loudness contour that appears to be louder even at low volume, preventing the perceived sound from being dominated by the mid-frequencies where the ear is most sensitive.
Hi All,
i have been asked to look at a Sime Planet 25/60. This is a boiler I haven't seen before so I was wondering if any one nos of this model and if so recognise th se symptoms. When the boiler comes on in the morning it sound like a jet taking off, it runs for about 5 mins on heat the stops...
Hi...new here so not sure if I am posting in the correct section...but anyway here goes....as the title says I have a grundfos condensation system for my central heating system...it is located in my airing cupboard - it just sits in the far corner of the cupboard...I put some washing away in...
Door off! Checked condense which was clear, checked flue which was clear. Took off burner and checked probes which were fine!
It's gotta be an air flow problem....would a dodgy fan cause this?
Cheers lads
Hi, sorry if this has already been posted. When we flush any of our three toilets whether it be upstairs or downstairs the water pipes make a really loud groaning noise and rattle the pipes. It's like there is an air lock or something?!? Is there a way I can get rid of the terrible noise?? Any...
Hi there,
I am a bit worried as I've just bought a ground floor flat (in a block of flats), and I keep on being awaken at random hours of the night by what seems to be a thundering waterfall noise or fountain or a sound like water really falling hard (a bit like if some heavy rain was...

I recently moved into a new house which has a baxi 80e combi boiler. The boiler worked perfectly fine when i first bought the house. I spent several months renovating the house which hadn't been lived in for 2 years, i'm guessing the boiler was hardly ever used if at all in that time. I removed...

When I open hot water tap the boiler fires and the burner makes a very loud sound. Can this sound be reduced? As the firing intensity sound is too loud.
Hi
We have a Triton Power Shower (model AS2000) which we have had for quite a few years and which has very gradually started to make a very loud noise when used. It is now just silly so something has to be done. It might be 'wear and tear' but I was wondering whether there is any point in...

Hi everyone,
My mother-in-laws cistern has started to make a loud noise when it is filling up. When she turns on the tap in the bathroom, the noise stops.
Do the pipes just need padding wrapped round them to stop them vibrating? Or do you think its something else.
Any help will be...
