anyway of telling the BTU/watts on an existing rad?

measure it, ie 600mm x 1000mm, then wether its a double or single panel, then look at a manufacturers catalouge online (Biasi, Kermi, etc etc).

For a rough idea, measure radiator then look in Screwfix catalogue.
