Oil Boiler installation

Hi

What are the regulations around installing a second hand oil combi boiler, am I right in saying they have to follow manufacturers instructions and building regs? Had people install on and it's positioned where I can't take the rear cover off to reach the condensate. The installation instructions says it must be accessible for emptying at service. I be received one response from multiple emails to them saying you told us to put it there and you can reach from taking the lid off (with finger tips and which doesn't allow you to remove the trap).

Surely everyone tells the installer where to put it, where the response should be "no, you won't be able to fully service". I no heating engineer.

I think regs also says space for maintenance.

Any advice, and what can I do about it?

First you have been lucky to find a installer that will fit a second hand boiler. We certainly wouldn't (always get blamed if boiler goes wrong)
External boiler by any chance?
You should have certainly been advised re clearances.
You really need to get it sorted to get access to trap
Some clear pictures of install would be good.

Yes, we were 'lucky'. Many said no and these made it clear about parts and warranty. If they said we wouldn't be able to service I definitely would have cancelled it. I've sent them a lot of emails to reasonably resolve and basically ignored.

Yes, it's external, why do you ask?. I am concerned about how long it takes to sort and how long the trap will be clogged for. Spoke with oftec today who said there are no timescales.
Some photos attached. The gap at the back is probably about 5 to 6 inches deep. Screws to remove rear panel are at the bottom.

What makes it worse is that from day 1 soot was coming from flue that we didn't know what it was. Got a lot worse and the service engineer said it was set up wrong and now the trap is full of soot. Took him 3.5 hrs to clean.

Should never ever have been installed like that.
The Grant instructions clearly say space is needed to take of back panel to service trap.
I would say your only chance is to relocate trap to front of boiler like internal models.
Probably have to relocate expansion vessel but that's not end of world.
See your 'installer' did not believe in insulating pipework either.

Another plumber said that about insulation too, I've since bought a lot of insulation to do myself.


I think their silence says it all. They seem like quite a well established outfit, so not a one man band cowboy. Maybe a genuine mistake but they should still engage to resolve IMO.

If they could relocate the trap I would be fine with that.

Good evening, Can any one advise on the following matter, my external oil combi boiler has now died, so i have purchased brand new Grants external combi boiler, will be quite happy for it to be installed exactly where the old one is, and the oil tank is in position where it always was when we bought the property, SO do i need to have the new boiler commisioned ? I have a friend who is fully trained in heating plumbing etc, but he works for NHS, so not his own business, would it be ok for him to do it ? or does it need to be a company ? I am in scotland, TIA
