Good day guys, a question aimed at you one man bands .
Do you charge the same hourly rate on what ever job you are on, whether its a plumbing job or gas ??.
Or do you charge separate rates ??

Myself its the same rate whatever, but I am considering changing it !!!
Thank you

I charge £40/hr for plumbing jobs and £60/hr for gas work. But depending on the customer, I can make changes. I'll charge OAP's less.

Same rate for whatever work it is but I charge more for 1st hour than subsequent ones.

village isnt such an idiot :), me plumbing/gas callout first hr £75/85, next hr 40/45 normal working hours, weekends and evenings think of a figure, boxing day etc callout £250 min

don't see the point in charging two rates id never do plumbing if I charged more for gas

coz you make more with gas and the little old lady gets you to do her washer and u end up repairing her boiler next job :)

well theres the exception to the rule
but if you where to charge less for plumbing on say day rate on a bathroom
you've still got to pay your gas safe and such

so you'd end up loosing money

no, just not make as much

Depends what I charge usually 40 quid first hour thirty after.

However I am also of the opinion of the custs money looks better in my bank than theirs

This is obviously where I have been going wrong in the past charging 25 each and every hour.Got called to an "emergency" this week they got B&Q fitters over to fit their bathroom turned off stop tap on a wiped joint and it collapsed flooding house.I ordered a leadloc and new stoptap when asked how much I said 120 only for the fact they never gave local boys the work they could not pay me quick enough that's 100 for 1.5 hrs work,in all fairness to the B&Q fitter he had a hard ride off the customers but did tell me he was not a plumber or a tiler but a joiner I have never seen so many flexis ever.Did any of you see a grey flexi 3/4 about 900mm connected to polyplumb WTF..brum

No to 2 different prices. I pay extra insurances etc to be gas safe registered insurances etc, if they want a plumber I am more than qualified to work on most domestic systems but they will pay the same as gas, I can't see the point in having 2 different charges.

So,e people are way to cheap. You need to work out all your overheads per working day. I.e, petrol, van ins, pl ins, tax, gas safe, stationary, advertising etc, I have 1 office staff 4 days a week, 1temo 4hrs a week and an apprentice. (Just had one engineer leave so have had to work out daily overheads again. It's really surprising how much it adds up.
Mine is currently £300 plus vat per day to break even. As a one man band it would be £160 plus vat to break even.
we charge £42 plus vat per hr every hour. No free diagnosis. (Why anyone does this for free is beyond me, it's your time your petrol so should be charged for).

Couldn't agree more. I used to do free diagnosis and I used to be charging out at £200 and wondered why I never had much left in the account each month. We are a smallish company and charge out at £250 plus VAT a day and are finally making a decent profit!! Slowly saving up for my dream of building homes eventually :)

We charge £30ph/ph and work on a 2 hour call basis as we factor in traveling time too :)

I charge £240 plus vat day rate as we'll. I make more on breakdowns/servicing and safety checks though. Rarely do day rates.

Overheads all the same weather lads doing gas water or cleaning windows. Flat rate EXPENSIVE! Love the idea of happy money now it's always happy money!

i find it hard to justify charging over £30. Things need to change....
Thing is, i only do plumbing so thats the going rate. Most calls are poxy dripping taps, toilets, that sort of thing. For a dripping tap, nobody wants to pay more than £20-£30 if that. And I can no longer be bothered with them but needs must.
I also do more 'specialist' sort of work which I have another price for..
Basically I make it up as I go along.
I had a call at 1730 last night - water dripping through a ceiling.
I couldn't be bothered but I thought I best help them out. I went out straight away.
I turned up to a hovel of a house and the seal on the bath waste was leaking. They'd filled the bath up in the morning (for some reason) and the bath plug was passing water causing a steady drip through the trap - £45 cash for half an hour which I was satisfied with

I charge £40 for first hour, £35 thereafter. £225 for the day. Emergency £80 for first hour then £35 thereafter.

I find a lot if people don't care over the extra £10 I charge for the 1st hour. I was charging flat £30 an hour and thought I would try upping it a bit and only 1 person has said I'm expensive. I do a lot of plumbing jobs and to me they are more awkward (probably because I have more experience with heating)
