cause

Causality (also referred to as causation, or cause and effect) is influence by which one event, process, state or object (a cause) contributes to the production of another event, process, state or object (an effect) where the cause is partly responsible for the effect, and the effect is partly dependent on the cause. In general, a process has many causes, which are also said to be causal factors for it, and all lie in its past. An effect can in turn be a cause of, or causal factor for, many other effects, which all lie in its future. Some writers have held that causality is metaphysically prior to notions of time and space.Causality is an abstraction that indicates how the world progresses, so basic a concept that it is more apt as an explanation of other concepts of progression than as something to be explained by others more basic. The concept is like those of agency and efficacy. For this reason, a leap of intuition may be needed to grasp it. Accordingly, causality is implicit in the logic and structure of ordinary language. In English studies of Aristotelian philosophy, the word "cause" is used as a specialized technical term, the translation of Aristotle's term αἰτία, by which Aristotle meant "explanation" or "answer to a 'why' question". Aristotle categorized the four types of answers as material, formal, efficient, and final "causes". In this case, the "cause" is the explanans for the explanandum, and failure to recognize that different kinds of "cause" are being considered can lead to futile debate. Of Aristotle's four explanatory modes, the one nearest to the concerns of the present article is the "efficient" one.
David Hume, as part of his opposition to rationalism, argued that pure reason alone cannot prove the reality of efficient causality; instead, he appealed to custom and mental habit, observing that all human knowledge derives solely from experience.
The topic of causality remains a staple in contemporary philosophy.

Will my bath or shower waste layout cause trap siphoning?

Just wondering if this pipe layout might cause any trap syphoning from the shower or bath traps. Bath waste run is 2m x 40mm pipe from trap to tee, which connects directly to the soil pipe. The shower waste run is 1.5m x 40mm pipe and connects to a tee which is joined to the bath waste run and...

Is it possible for a failed thermostatic bath mixer tap to cause crossover problems

I have a central heating with storage tank system. I woke this morning to what sounded like running water, although no taps were turned on. I went to my boiler room in the basement and the pressure valve was reading 10 psi and water was running out via the pressure release valve outlet. I turned...

Could lack of pump overrun cause hex problems in the future?

Just thinking... my new boiler (a Viessmann) was installed without pump overrun, apparently it's not required because it has a stainless steel heat exchanger, but when the burner cuts out I see the temperature slowly rise (as reported by the boiler) to around 95 degrees, I assume this is the...

Damaged Water Pipe - What was the cause?

Hi I'm currently in an argument about the cause of a damaged pipe which has caused further damage to the building. I would really appreciate as many opinions as possible to how people think the damage to the pipe in the picture was likely to have occurred . To reduce bias, I'm not going to say...

What might cause this tap to over-run?

After turning cold on and then off there is a 2 sec gap then for a few seconds more water comes out. Not just a few drips, not full force, somewhere in the middle. Not every time but most times. On swan neck taps where this happens I have presumed it's water left in spout and a bit of...

Trying to get my head around the cause of three cold radiators.

Hi all. I have three radiators in my house that are not warming up at all, the other radiators are hot. All the valves (they aren't thermostatic) are open on the three cold rads, and each have in-pipes that are hot to the touch, but the radiators themselves are uniformly cold. Bleeding the...

How to diagnose the cause of pump over

Recently my CH system is getting Pump Over, but I unsure how to figure out the cause. 1. Seven minutes after switching on, hot water pours through the vent into the CH header tank. ( Nb. the pouring is like a tap turned on ). 2. This happens with either water & heating, or just water. 3. The...

Hot water tank feed shutoff valve stuck?

Hi, I would like to replace a hot water pipe in the property that is corroded. Unfortunately when I try to close off the valve that feeds the hot water tank, it turns about 1/10th of a turn but no more. It is not stiff, it just seems this is the limit of the valve, however it is not affecting...

Can inhibitor cause problems rather than prevent them?

After installing new rads no inhibitor was used, the reason given was that it can cause problems rather than prevent them. The system has been without for approx 4 years now and I've got an Atmos multi boiler, is this advice correct? thanks.

Hi! So we had a bathroom fitted and this happened (see picture). The bath was fitted in a corner that wasn't 90 degrees and this strip was added to fill the gap between bath and wall. Can we retrofit a shower screen here somehow or will anything just leak because the surface isn't level and...
