cause

Causality (also referred to as causation, or cause and effect) is influence by which one event, process, state or object (a cause) contributes to the production of another event, process, state or object (an effect) where the cause is partly responsible for the effect, and the effect is partly dependent on the cause. In general, a process has many causes, which are also said to be causal factors for it, and all lie in its past. An effect can in turn be a cause of, or causal factor for, many other effects, which all lie in its future. Some writers have held that causality is metaphysically prior to notions of time and space.Causality is an abstraction that indicates how the world progresses, so basic a concept that it is more apt as an explanation of other concepts of progression than as something to be explained by others more basic. The concept is like those of agency and efficacy. For this reason, a leap of intuition may be needed to grasp it. Accordingly, causality is implicit in the logic and structure of ordinary language. In English studies of Aristotelian philosophy, the word "cause" is used as a specialized technical term, the translation of Aristotle's term αἰτία, by which Aristotle meant "explanation" or "answer to a 'why' question". Aristotle categorized the four types of answers as material, formal, efficient, and final "causes". In this case, the "cause" is the explanans for the explanandum, and failure to recognize that different kinds of "cause" are being considered can lead to futile debate. Of Aristotle's four explanatory modes, the one nearest to the concerns of the present article is the "efficient" one.
David Hume, as part of his opposition to rationalism, argued that pure reason alone cannot prove the reality of efficient causality; instead, he appealed to custom and mental habit, observing that all human knowledge derives solely from experience.
The topic of causality remains a staple in contemporary philosophy.

How to locate the cause of sewage smell?

My living room smells like a sewer but I can't tell where it is coming from. Not sure where to start looking. The saniflo discharge pipe runs above but there is no sign of leakage on the ceiling. The main drain run from the manhole at the back runs under the kitchen, which has a solid floor...

    Boiler inefficiency- cause and fix??

Hi, moved into a home a year ago with what is probably an old heating system. There is a gas boiler linking to radiator central heating, and a water tank. Energy company charged an enormous amount for gas last winter (admittedly I hadn't taken regular meter readings so was unaware until a huge...

My bath plug/drain has suddenly blocked, what might be the cause?

Firstly, I already have a fair idea of what I need to do to fix the problem (I hope plunging will fix it, I just need to buy one), I would just like to know what sort of thing can suddenly obstruct the pipe that my bath drains to. The problem... Normally someone can have a bath and then pull...

    Cause of cold shower

Hi I fitted a low pressure shower set when I had a low pressure open vented system, which has a very low pressure rating. I now have a combi boiler with good pressure. I was wondering if having a shower set with a too low pressure rating could cause predominantly cold water to come out? The...

High gas rate on SIME Format HE. Possible cause?

Anyone familiar with servicing SIME Format 30HE? I had to shut down a boiler today as it was using far too much gas and I was unable to identify the fault. The CO readings were totally fine but the gas rate was coming in at around 38kW. Has anyone come across this before or have any idea what...

What can cause intermittent flow on hot tap?

Can anyone advise? The problem is on a hot tap (not as the cold tap as shown) - the water intermittently stops and then goes to a trickle - turning the tap on and off the water then starts again - the next day it goes back to a trickle. I don't think it can be an airlock - is there a mechanism...

Why would closing the tub valve cause the shower to stop?

Hello, I have an odd plumbing issue that I would like advice on. This is a new house construction, single story, with one bathroom. Hot water is provided by an instant-on heater. The water, both hot and cold, works fine in the kitchen and the bathroom sink. However, the tub/shower is acting...

    Cause & effect (funny story)

This maybe isn't so much about asking for advice as giving it 🤔 I had a leaking HW cylinder (23 years old) that I got fed up patching up with plumbers gold 🤣 - so decided to replace it and do some remodelling of the plumbing in the airing cupboard while it was all pulled out. before, during, &...

URGENT Installed Unvented cylinder will cause water pressure high?

Dear all, I recently got a gas engineer installed a new boiler and an unvented cylinder & expansion vessel in my house, replaced the old boiler, vented cylinder and water tanks in loft. Just after a month of installation, last week, the house lost hot water, it was because the cylinder...

Cause of intermittent noise from pump and zone valves

Open vented fully pumped oil fired system. Works well but occasionally (every few days or do) loud throbbing noise from pipes directly above boiler. Goes away if system switched off and then immediately on again. New pump and no benefit from replacing zone valves. Any ideas gratefully received

Stiff shower temperature knob - does anyone know the cause?

Hi all, Would really appreciate any advice. My shower temperature knob/dial on the right has suddenly become so stiff it does not move. So now jammed on the hot setting (and it's not even as hot asit should be either). It's relatively new - only installed about three months ago after a similar...

Half of drains cause floor drain in basement to overflow

We most likely have a clog problem that we can't seem to resolve. These are the details: The drain has been slow in the tub in bathroom #1 (located on the east end of the basement of our ranch home) for a while, but it was always keeping up pretty close and finished draining within 30 seconds...

    Cause of boiler ignition issue

I've been to look at a boiler intermittent ignition failure and of course when I'm there it's working ok but got a video sent by the customer of the noise. I can't quite figure if it's the boards relays or the gas valve making the noise . Your thoughts would be appreciated

    Cause of spluttering kitchen tap?

Hi, I have a sealed & pressurized water system (house is around 10 years old) and a few weeks ago, the kitchen sink tap was spluttering quite loudly each time the cold/hot water was turned on elsewhere in the home. Called a local plumber, showed him what was happening and he said the PRV...

Scaled Heat Exchanger? Bad enough to cause problem?

I was recently advised "heat exchanger scaled" on a Worcester Bosch SiII combi boiler. There was a DW intermitent problem - sometimes DHW ran cold after a short while - other times worked okay. Gas installer diagnosed scaled hex. Options were to have new hex (mega cost) or replace boiler. As...

Will my bath or shower waste layout cause trap siphoning?

Just wondering if this pipe layout might cause any trap syphoning from the shower or bath traps. Bath waste run is 2m x 40mm pipe from trap to tee, which connects directly to the soil pipe. The shower waste run is 1.5m x 40mm pipe and connects to a tee which is joined to the bath waste run and...

Is it possible for a failed thermostatic bath mixer tap to cause crossover problems

I have a central heating with storage tank system. I woke this morning to what sounded like running water, although no taps were turned on.
