Calling all plumbers/bathroom people!? 'Toilets & Cracked Tiles'

Sorry I am new to this so not sure if I am doing this right but hello all!

I just wondered if anyone would possibly be able to tell me what has happened here?

So the other day I was sitting on the toilet when I heard a crack, I checked it all out couldn't see anything so went about my day. Today I was cleaning the bathroom and saw this! So this must have been the crack sound I heard. But what is it and why did it happen? Also what is at the center of the hole in the tile, it looks like a screw to me but I'm not sure.
I am a tenant at this property and my tenancy is over very soon, I just want to make sure I get my full deposit back but that would be difficult with my landlord. Is the crack in the tile my fault? Is it an issue with how the bathroom was installed? What do I need to do?

In my opinion, the issue is with how the bathroom was installed.

To ensure you are covered in the event of an argument, take several more photographs, starting with one of the whole scene and then a bit closer in and at several angles. You want to be able to show that this was the only damage. Carefully preserve the broken pieces of tile, in a plastic bag and label with the date and location.

The cone-shaped damage is characteristic of a point source of pressure at the apex of the cone, i.e. the nail head pressing on the rear of the tile. From your description, the framework supporting the pan was not sufficiently rigid, and the board the tiles are attached to flexed causing the failure.

The reason for keeping photographic evidence is that in the unlikely event that the landlord decides to get it fixed properly quite a lot of stripping out, fixing and making good will be required. This will result in a large bill and only your word that the damage that needed to be repaired was (a) not your fault and (b) very minor. Most landlords would probably just fill a defect like that with a small piece of soft packing over the nail capped with white epoxy filler.

As well as being an ex plumber and heating engineer of many years experience I am nowadays a part time building surveyor for an old school friend. I am qualified and tend to do rentals at all stages in the tenancy. I am very familiar with your dilemma. Rest assured no independant experienced surveyor would put this down to you its a defect or 'fair wear and tear' of a faulty laid tile. If I was you and you are moving on soon report this to your letting agent/landlord in order that they know before trying to re let. Take a few moor piccys keep them.
