When i started out i made the transition from paye to a soletrader gradually over 3 years, i did both i contacted HMRC obtained my UTR number, public liability , gas safe registraton as long as i stayed under £6500 as a sole trader i was exempt from paying extra class 2 - 3 national insurance I just paid 20 percent on the overall profit, your employer will know your doing this as tax issues do from time to time cross over also do not trade in your own name choose a company name to trade under. The other thing being totally serious now is growing your business. Beware you need to go from 1 fella you to 5+ very quickly. 2,3,4 fitters paid properly do not make enough to support the boss man who is running around getting stuff and more jobs. Seen too many fellas struggle on Friday to buy a pint after paying 4 men. Then there are slow payers, non payers and pernickity customers leaky new rads, is it worth it ...of course it was for me. I work 7 days a week and start early. Well not Sat after 12.00 and Sundays unless I am fully engaged Rob Foster aka centralheatking
