Discuss EP2 replacement programmer for EP2002 in the Central Heating Forum area at PlumbersForums.net

Could someone confirm if the Potterton EP2 programmer is a DIRECT replacement for the EP2002? In other words the one programmer is unclipped and the other is clipped on without any rewiring? I have read differing reviews that indicate if my EP2002 acts as a wiring centre it is not quite as straight forward as directly replacing.

The HW slider on my programmer looks as if it will not last much longer so the programmer is in need of replacement. I have the CH slider permanently on and the CH is controlled from my phone via a Netatmo 'smart' thermostat. I control the HW manually, a situation which suits me.

Thanks.

My understanding is that the wiring of the 'business' terminals is the same for both, and Potterton even issued a note saying you could fit the EP2 directly to the old backplate of the EP2002

The old 2002 had a number of useful additional terminals, not connected to anything, that allowed you to use it as a sort of mini-wiring-centre. The EP2 doesn't have those, so anyone wanting to use the new backplate that comes with the EP2 might be puzzled there's nowhere for extra wires to go. That maybe where the confusion comes from.

Thanks Basher. So, when I look at the wiring of the EP2002, I might find a lot of extra wiring that the EP2 will not accommodate and I don't really want to buy another 2002. In addition, I'm not really using the programmer as intended anyway because I'm controlling the heating from my phone/thermostat. I will have to look at the current wiring and see if it is a wiring centre.

I am saying that if you buy an EP2, you can unclip your EP2002, and then clip the EP2 in its place (leaving the old backplate on the wall untouched).

It only could be a problem if you want to use the new backplate that comes with the EP2 - but there is no reason to do that other than the colour!
