The non return valves in the shower's ibox unit had got stuck open by a piece of swarf and so, because they couldn't shut the back flow off, were forming a bridge between the empty hot pipes...

    Sorry. Forgot to add that the plumber totally disconnected the hot tank from the rest of the house yesterday. Pipes cut off the lot. :)

    Thanks for that Radioman. Yes he's all OK. The insurance company say that the broken tank is wear and tear so no help there. And the damage to the house is so far only cosmetic so the excess is more than the cost of repair. Insurance eh?

    Right thanks. So we need to buy a new thermostatic cartridge for an eight year old Hansgrohe shower in time for our plumber's return. Are these usually a standard item that would fit all Hansgrohe showers or do they change much from model to model, do you think?
