This is probably the best place to ask this.

Recently I was contacted by a college about a job as a plumbing technician. It was only after being asked to go see them tomorrow to discuss the job it made me wonder what is a plumbing technician, is it just another name for a plumber or it an educational role.

Any advice would be helpful.

Darren

Hi Darren

A Plumbing Technician role in FE colleges is someone who does not teach (or at least they do not get paid to) instead they look after all the practical side to aid the lecturers so they would manage the stores, ordering the materials & issuing them out to the students, look after the workshops ensuring they were kept clean & tidy, stripping down the students work / assessments to savage materials, fill & paint the assessment areas ready for the next one etc. etc.

This role will often lead you into teaching is you want it as you see how the practical side delivered.

Hope that helps

Which College ?

I'd agree with Chris.

Person who looks after the stores, or more like the person who doesn't give you a fresh length of copper and chases you down when you haven't painted your bay after you have finished.

in college yes, on site more like a charge hand running the site?

well, we all know what the chemistry technician was at scool, low cut top and suspenders and hid in the cupboard where the teacher kept popping in too!
