how do you choose what system to install direct cold with unvented hot water, indirect mains with vented dhw 2 pipe systems v 1 pipe. does it all come down to budget?

2 pipe heating. Unvented/vented - explain pros and cons to customer and gauge reaction. Although budget comes into the equation, like most things in life, price is not the number one decision. What will work and what won't work are more important than price alone.

1 pipe heating doesn't meet building regs so that's out of the equation anyway

Flow rate required, size of property (number of bathrooms), incoming mains pressure / flow rate, space available etc etc and of course cost.

Use your eyes as you walk in the door and weigh it up. Not all can afford to pay a premium for top of the range boilers but offer an option.
Regardless of what you fit your side should be much the same.

system design depends on the needs of the customer and what can work in that property. You have to try and specify what meets there needs and is within there buget. In an ideal world you will maintain a balance between the two but it can be hard when you have to compete against people/companies that offer poor and unrealistic services.
