What's the best way to learn to do breakdown and repairs? Any recommendations?

that means a lot fella it really does am glad I've helped , same as I've rang gasman , Croppie etc and asked for some guidance and am sure gasman will acknowledge he has rang me too a few times ,Were all learning non of us know everything unless your Kirk or tamz

Live asked many a questions , some may seem dumb but if I don't know I don't know , but I ya know, something someone else doesn't

Fully agree lee, plumbing scope is far too wide to know EVERYTHING! I installed a Vokera for first time 2 days ago, rang up regarding external controls, waited 10mins to get connecting to a absolute pr*** who told me to 'wind my neck in' and told me ive sent 240v through the room stat terminal (when i crossed the wires from the room stat there) he took the mick out of me and laughed down the phone and told his mate (this guy on the phone is a idiot) lol no but u sorted my problem with a baxi 105 last time i had bother i think, regarding a flow switch. At least i thought it was u haha this forum has helped me massively even though ive been banned quite a bit haha

The hardest question in the world will always be the one you don't know the answer to.

I've rung gas man and he's rung me too. Knowledge is something to be shared, not hoarded. No one knows everything but everyone knows someone who knows something.

Which makes the UKPF the best plumbing forum on t'interweb.

Dead right Jon it is the best forum on the internet and it also has the best people on it US

I couldn't find this on gas installers work mate tho. Don't think it's condensing

dual purpose that one with the lid shut it will condense open it and it becomes standard erfficency

Something I'm also interested in, when serving my time I never really got alot of breakdown work it was mainly servicing. Ive no idea how to find continuity, check for polarity etc and what a good reading is on a multimeter in regards to amps, ohms etc when testing over a component.

Is there courses for this kind of stuff?

baxi do a three day course that will if nothing else teach you to use a multi meter its a very good course

Can you do these courses whilst you're training for Gas Safe do you think Steve?

Supposed to be GSR but if two of u and one is GSR your normally in or just put down a mates number they never check and hardly think gas safe or HSE are going to chase you for impersonating or giving the impression you were GSR!

Contact your local rep, then you get it for free than paying for it

Phone up the rep and tell him you are thinking of fitting their boilers but want some training on them. You don't pay.
Get the number of your local one from your nearest merchants.

Btw how did yer acs go?
Spot on lads cheers.

yes tamz it went well , passed all 3 appliances first
time. Big thanks for the email mate! Was a real help. Was surprised there wasn't a theory section to cookers, and I done the questions you sent me about 3/4 times so I ended up knowing a fair bit about cookers I.e types, faults, clearances etc that I never even got tested on but glad I know it regardless.
I don't think he'll get on the fault finding courses for free, but certainly the DuoTec course, which is very good in its own right
Thanks for this.

I will definetly do this aswell, a company I applied to said their guys are well experienced and have been on vokera baxi etx courses so if I can show I've went and done the courses off my own back then that should stand me in good stead.

How long to boil a tattie? Haven,t a clue i'm barred off using a cooker as i cook everything at full blast and leave the place like a bomb site.

Most of the reps from all the manu's will get you on their courses for free if they think they will get a few sales.

I've never boiled a tatty in my puff. 6 mins in the micro and no POCs to worry about other than piping hot starch spray haha.

Do their courses just cover their specific boilers or do they incorporate fault finding too?

Tamz
I'm in the midst of my gas training are there any test questions that you'd be able to forward to me also that may aid me in my training? Thanks

It's pretty much their boilers but it shows u and helps u understand others

What bits are you struggling on?
I was just after some sort of training aids in general...any generalised questions etc are appreciated....I was going to have a look on the web for some but would rather get from a reliable source tbh. If it helps in any way it will be worth it.
