Adjustable spanners!

Hello there

I hope you don't mind me posting and I would really appreciate your help!

Basically I want to get my boyfriend some adjustable spanners as part of his christmas present. I know bahco is a good make, I've been looking at them, but I have no idea which size/spanner I need to be buying him. I don't even know how many spanners you plumbers use!

He's mainly a 'heating engineer' type plumber, he specialises with oil boilers, but I think he will be doing more jobs other than boilers like.....radiators/bathrooms. I just don't know what tools his work requires and I don't want to buy the wrong tools. But I don't just want to give him the cash. I can always keep the receipts.

Is there a 'bog standard' few adjustable (bahco) spanners you could link me to please? I'll probably get him two or three to go in his stocking since they're quite dear

You can't go wrong with Bahco. Personally I get most use out of my 8" and 10". I certainly wouldn't go any larger than 10".
Also don't waste your money on the pretty shiny chrome ones, they're even more expensive and the gunmeta grey ones do exactly the same job.l

I wouldn't be with out my Bacho 8" wide jaw adjustables, they will fit just about everything you find on a daily basis! also a good pair of grips (knipex) go hand in hand with the adjustables, try screwfix I think they had bacho's on offer a while ago.

Another Bahco fan here. My 10 inch set cover most eventualities, but I also have a 8" Rothenberger set which do the job, but havent got quite the build quality and heft of the Bahco. I am planning on getting a wide jaw model for cylinder unions and suchlike.

As above, dont even think about buying budget shiny ones. I would rather have a full set of standard spanners.

all as above, ive used loads of poor tools but the bahco as superb and I would never go back, 8 and 10 inch wide jaw slim, if he works on a site make sure he marks them as they may go missing!!!

Definitely bahco for me as well 8" and 10". I have an ancient stubby adjustable spanner as well, picked up at a car boot after rummaging through an old box of tools. Great for working inside some of the tighter spaces on the oil boilers.

I recently bought a 6" Bahco spanner - excellent for those hard to get at nuts.

now having said that, are you sure he has not already got a set?. otherwise you are back to square one!.

the 4'' ones are very handy pocket size.

If you were my other half, I would like a nice set of ratchet spanners. I have loads of of bahco spanners.

i dont use bahcos, stopped using them a couple of years ago now i use a 10inch knipex pliers wrench to hold and the correct sized double open ended spanner, never use grips on compression fittings as they rip up the brass and leave terrible brass splinters, if i had to choose an adjustable it would be irega hands down they have taken bahco over in terms of quality and have a life time guarantee.

Bahco 9029 and 9031 are a good start. Irega are not as good;fact.

Never used irega but cant see how they could be better than Bahco.
