So in effect after the blue headed valve has been taken off, the hole must be plugged with the 3/4 cap seal. Sorry for being thick.

Thank you everyone. This was finally sorted last night. I used PTFE tape on the olives both for the straight compression coupler and the gate valve. Phew this was one heck of a job for me. At least I can learn from the experience. However I have another issue that is on this thread...
Thanks rpm. sorry i meant to say I was replacing a gate valve with a ball valve. I will need to solder with the straight coupler won't I? Is there an alternative without soldering?

I got fantastic advice from here and sorted out my shower. However it has stopped working again. I have on investigation discovered that the gate valve on the cold water pipe is broken. Will I need a pro or can I do it myself? If I do shall I go for the ball valve?
