It seems some sort of rubber diaphram had split in half and got
sucked into a fan. The final repair took about ten minutes.

it doesn't need topping up that more than about every 3-4 months or so I think. the other issues it has are randomly switching off and not heating radiators regardless of thermostat (I power off and on and it runs ok again) This does cause serious problems but not technical ones. That is worse...
