stopcock
A stopcock is a form of valve used to control the flow of a liquid or gas. The term is not precise and is applied to many different types of valve. The only consistent attribute is that the valve is designed to completely stop the flow when closed fully.
I have a plumber coming tomorrow to change a cartridge on a badly dripping tap on my bathroom mixer unit. There is no separate isolating valve for this tap so I'll have to close the stopcock. I tried closing it today but it won't go absolutely 100% closed and there is still a very slight flow...
Hi everyone,
I've joined the forum today as I've found myself going round in circles with what I think might be a pretty simple problem, hoping someone can help.
Our dishwasher is leaking and the manual says this can be fixed by cleaning the water inlet filter. To do this, we need to close the...
Hi Folks,
Over the weekend, my wife insisted that I cleared out a junk cupboard in our utility room, in doing so I discovered a stopcock (that we have never used) had a load of crust around it. It looks to me that at some stage it probably leaked and sealed itself. I've never used it as it's...
Hi all,
I joined today and am a newbie at plumbing DIY. Thought I'd share my experience replacing the stopcock under my sink.
The old one looked very corroded around the tap handle. An Anglian Water engineer was at the property measuring my water pressure and flow rate. When he saw the...
Hello,
I have quite low flow rate for my electric shower (a piddling 5L/min), and would like some tips or advice about how to solve or find the cause. I would like a flow rate of about 12L/min.
Here is my set-up:
Standard gas boiler (not a combi) in the kitchen, have cold water tanks in the...
Morning everyone, if anyone could please offer advice on this issue it would help me with a massive issue regarding the water supply in my flat.
My flat kitchen and bathroom was always on mains supply (no tank supply at all) and the rest of the 5 flats were mains supply to kitchen and water...
Hi,
as you can see pictured I have a stopcock without a packing gland. Over the past few days my cistern inlet was suffering from an airlock and it was hammering constantly after filling. I turned off this stopcock, drained all the pipes, turned the taps back off and then let the water back...
Hi, I have a stopcock in my closet at my flat, but despite me turning it clockwise all the way, this doesn't seem to be stopping the flow of water.
Is there anyway I can check if that truly is the stopcock and if not, is there a way I can find the actual one?
I just want to stop the water flow...
I have an underground stopcock that is leaking a lot through the gland. I have dug down three foot to access the stopcock as I also want to move the 28mm black plastic pipe two feet to the right as well as be sure what was leaking the pipes or the gland. The tap is brass with brass nuts.
What is...
My family and I live in a bungalow, we have lived there for nearly five years. The property was built in 1964. I want to turn off the water supply so I can install a washing machine, the other place where we lived had modern fittings at the back of the washing machine to stop the water.
We...
Good afternoon fellow plumbers
I’m new to this site, I’m just after some advice please. So I have a customer who needs his old stopcock replacing, it’s black pipe coming up into the stopcock and then 15mm after, the black pipe is actually screwed to the bottom of the stopcock, I assume the...
Hi All. I am trying to locate the stopcock in my property. After a good few hours searching I think I may have found it - but would like some advice from plumbers / DIY experts. Is what I have found actually a stopcock? Can you take a look at the pictures attached and tell me what you think? I...
Advice from experienced plumbers will be appreciated. I inherited the old stopcock without a disk (2 pictures below). Attempts to find a lever or disc with 8mm rectangular hole were unsuccessful and use of a locking plier was not convenient in emergency, so another stopcock was fitted after it...
Hi all, thank you so much in advance for any help. I’m always really grateful for the advice and support from experts when I have been on here a few years ago.
There’s a dripping coming from my bathroom and I can hear it coming from behind the toilet and I’m worried it’s causing a buildup which...
Apprentice plumber here studying level 2 at college.
Before I got into plumbing I tiled over my stopcock as I assumed I wouldn't ever use it, because all my outlets have isolation valves and I have an indirect gravity fed system in a small flat with a Stuart Turner pump (now as I learn more at...
Hello all
Anyone experience of the following situation and can advise please before I contact the local water company?
Commercial (retail) property. Reduced water pressure.
Upon investigation, believe our external stopcock, which is located within our boundary, is leaking as the chamber is...
Got a leaky stopcock/valve/tap as I'm sure many do at this time of year in the northern hemisphere (UK based). Watched a few videos on this common problem, and it seems like some PTFE and an adjustable spanner will do the trick.
Only problem is, my stopcock looks nothing like others; where they...
Hi all. Thames Water lead pipes - meter to stopcock liability? I have had contradicting info. from TW & employees regarding the TW /consumer onus to repair or replace and various dates relating to policy changes. I was denied a free change or repair 5+ years ago. Also been told that near future...
Has anyone came across a stopcock that has a tapered cone with a 22mm imperial size nut and what looks like a tapered insert that compresses the 15mm copper to a taper?
