If anyone is in same situation. The old pressure reducing valve doesnt have a strainer, the screws give access to the pressure adjustment. It WAS the cause of the hammering. After buying several special plumbing tools, many incorrect purchases, working in tight spaces and having to stop drips or weeps, finally managed to fit a none weeping pressure reducing valve. Just make sure you get one with compression connections!
