Looking for some insights into the diaphragm pump on these magnificent beasts.

Just fixed one and in the process of finding the fault (thermostat pcb) noticed that the diaphragm pump only has one flexible tube running from it inside to its casing rather than the two mentioned in the service manual despite the pump have the outlets for two pipes and having two pipes external to the diaphragm pump casing into the gas operator. The tubes are attached to connectors through the rear of the cover and then through flexible tubes and then copper to the gas operator. So one of the two tubes into the operator at the moment has nothing going to it, it terminates in fresh air inside the cover of the diaphragm pump.

Now I know that this has not been disturbed for 10 years at least, possibly longer, and all the time has been working fine. Just out of curiosity why the two pipes leading to the operator on this model if only one is connected to the pump?
