Hi all,

We are about to strip our bathroom due to a prior leak. New floor, walls, the lot.

The bathroom is located on our 2nd floor of our house (timber framed). We had a walk in tiled shower and the waterproofing failed due to it not be completed correctly. We have had a severe leak that has ruining the floor.

As part of rebuilding the shower, does anyone have an opinion on the best way to complete the shower floor to prevent future leaks... using a tile tray, concrete screed and waterproofing completed correctly or custom shower base?

The shower is 2.3m wide and 1.3m deep.

Am I correct to assume that using a tray is the best way forward? Or will a correctly finished screed and waterproofing be sufficient?

Finally, the current floor is being cut out (chipboard) and will be replaced with compressed cement sheeting.

You can buy wedi board (or other brands), water proof foam wet room shower trays with a built in waste.

You tile over the top of it.

For some reason, if the grout/tile installation fails.
The foam board has a lip on the waste that the tiles butt to. There are small holes around the edge of this lip. If water penetrates the grout/tiles and the water proofing/tanking is applied correctly, the tanking/in built slope of the foam board directs the water to the waste through these holes.
This set up would prevent water causing damage to the sub floor/ceiling below but will still over time damage the tiles/grout.

I see no need for the cement board. The foam does the same job but is loads easier to install.

Take up old rotten sub floor. Treat all joists/wood in the area with wood preserver.

Lay a solid ply sub floor.

Then foam board the entire shower area.
Install foam wet room shower tray.

Then fill gaps between the boards with the recommended flexible silicone based sealant.

Then tape and seal all the joints.

Then tank the whole area, not just the joints.

Hello all, I’m replacing a concrete paving slab patio in the back yard. The original patio used 50mm deep concrete slabs on hardcore & sand. I’m planning to pour a 100mm deep concrete patio on 100mm hardcore. In order to achieve the same final height to line up with the rest of the patio, I...
