Soil pipe leaking into kitchen sink

Hi all,

I was called to a first floor flat last night because water was coming up out of the kitchen sink. It turned out to be from several flats upstairs and for some reason the soil stack had diverted water into the kitchen waste pipe then into the sink and all over the floor. Has anyone heard of this happening and can you suggest what to do please? I've put a spinner down the waste and removed some debris but no luck with the original problem.

Is there a blockage in the stack or sewer? Sounds like it.

The sewer was checked and ran fine but, wouldn't you know it, no one put any access whatsoever to the soil pipe anywhere in the building. I think somehow I'm going to have to get in there and check it but it's going to be a big job. No pun intended!

Could be messy if you are at the bottom trying to clear a blockage and the floor above is flushing the loo!!

How many above? Suggest you let them know of the problem and ask them to give you an hours grace when you get to that point.

If it's a first floor flat is the ground floor flat OK?

I have seen situations where discharge from above can go down a cross vent, either due to a design/installation fault or a partial blockage re-directing the flow. Worth checking the layout of the stack and vent ... otherwise no idea!!!!
