It's not switching by itself and when manually moved circulant is bleeding through to the heating circuit.

Plenty of access space to move pipes if necessary, but obviously a straight swap would be better. Anyone know what will fit straight in?

also might be a sludge inside the body, try to remove head and see if you can freely move it
 
Yep it's as easy as that. But as galaxy says if you can't move the valve manually when the actuator is off, that's when the fun starts.

Doing this job as a favour for my aunt who hasn't got a lot of money, so I don't want to have to replace both the valve and actuator if only the actuator is dead, but I don't want to risk only getting the actuator and then finding out the valve is knackered too!

Valve is definitely not seized up completely. What are the chances that I change the actuator and it's still duff?
