I am a novice DIYer and so I'll try and explain myself as best as I can.

My wife and I have recently moved into a new house. Under the sink where the cold water pipe t's off to the washing machine, rather than having the normal valve/connector, there was a tap - like an outside tap. This was constantly dripping so I got a local and reputable plumber to have a look. He turned the tap off so as to bypass it and further along the pipe fitted the proper type of valve. We had the same set up with the hot water pipe which connected to the dishwasher. With this he removed the tap and fitted the proper connector. The reason he didn't remove the cold water tap was that he said it was too difficult to do so. Not sure why.

Everything is working except that the cold water outside tap under the sink is now dripping, even though it is turned off. I don't really want to have to call the plumber (or even a different one) out again so I was wondering if you could advise me as to what to do. I wouldn't feel comfortable in cutting the pipe myself so wondered if there is anything that I could get that cut close off the end of the tap in a water tight way. However, if I was to do this, would the pressure build up and make things worse?

Hope I make sense and that you can help!

When did you get the plumber out ? Can you take a photo as i am not sure where it is dripping from outside under the sink ? Has it got an iso / check valve ?

how about a nice couple of photos as the other guys have requested it really would help us so we can hopefully help you. oh and welcome by the way:)regards turnpin

Yes I can take some photos today. Sorry if my explanation wasn't too helpful - I'm not too clued up on plumbing lingo.

I'll take photos this evening and post them later tonight or in the morning.

Many thanks!

The plumber came out last Wednesday so almost a week. As per my other post I'll get photos tonight. Not sure what valve is in place now.

Sorry again that I didn't explain myself properly. The photos were hard to take as it's rather cramped under my sink.

So the tap is fitted upside down. The blue you can see is the new connector. The open end of the tap is where the water is leaking from.

Hope this helps!

Thanks!

This might help you to see the type of tap.

Ah Ah!! now we can see what you mean good news this will be a quick fix for you go to your plumbers merchants and obtain a 3/4 BRASS cap with a couple of fibre washers and just screw it onto the tap and just nip it up gently with a spanner job done just leave it in place and it will be fine.He did not remove it because although it could be done it is tricky.good luck:)regards turnpin ps let us know how you get on

Well today I went and bought a 3/4 (22mm) Brass cap and fibre washers. It fits fine but still has a very small drip. Do you think it needs tightening a bit more or would a bit of PTFE tape round the tap end help?

Aye. Take the cap back off and stick the fibre washer in your gob. Seals better if it's moist! Wrap ptfe round your tap thread and put it all back together. Job done!

Ideal Logic 24, Previous problem was that the hot water was only cold or barely warm if the heating was in use. If heating was off and boiler cold then would get hot water most of the time. Changing the flow cartridge about 2 years ago (when I moved in) solved this problem enough to suffer it as...

I have a plumber coming tomorrow to change a cartridge on a badly dripping tap on my bathroom mixer unit. There is no separate isolating valve for this tap so I'll have to close the stopcock. I tried closing it today but it won't go absolutely 100% closed and there is still a very slight flow...

Our kitchen mixer tap has started dripping. Like so much of the plumbing in our almost new build bungalow, it is lacking! The plumber didn't install any isolating cocks in the H&C feed to the tap so how can I identify which of the valves is passing? Shut the whole H&C water system down?

Hello all, I'm would like to extend an existing outside tap to another point in the garden. I'm about to pour a concrete patio and was hoping to run the water line underneath. There are existing drain (and who knows what) pipes running along the same wall so I'm nervous about digging too far...
