I have a pedestal sink. The female aerator was clogged. I bought another one. Screwed it in tight and immediately it started leaking behind the sink. I took it off and ran the water without the aerator and it did not leak. The new aerator is the same diameter but just slightly shorter. Is it the wrong aerator or something else.

Sounds as if water is escaping from the aerator then running down the tap to poolat the low point.
