Sharp Point

As title guys n gals, been to a job today and customer asked me to look at some weeping compression fittings. Will fernox f4 be suitable?

thanks

Personally i hate any leak sealers , but surely when you can see the leaks its easier to fix them. If you do check they are brass olives and not soft copper

Does all solar leak? seen 2 installs and they both had seeps at the compression fittings...

Cheers TFJ, looking at the weeping joints i can see in the garage, remaking them could be possible......but i'm assuming there will be more on the flow/ return pipes behind the insulation and plasterboard in dormer roofwork to the panels on the roof.

Lol i thought you meant one or two ,sounds like them all.

There's dried residue all over the pump station and about 6 x comp fittings, so if thats a little snap shot of the overall system, i assume theyll be more!! And as IDCHAPPY mentioned it's not the first time i've seen them on thermal solar systems filled with glycol.

The problem is the massive expansion and contraction changes from 150°C down to -4°C can happen in one day - think clear skies, bright sunny winters day, freezing cold nights...

If the joint isn't done 100% correctly, with the right materials, then you'll find weeping joints.

My missus has just informed me that sealing against oil is best achieved with an anaerobic sealant. So if you chaps/gals who install solar are dealing with oil? then Loctite is not an option. Sorry

they are chatting about solar systems filled with water/glycol, no oil involved village

Look in our tools tray and you'll find Loctite 55 and 577, not a mm of PTFE to be seen. Can't remeber the name of the sealant we use on the solar thermal, though it is a special V high temperature one, could be the Solar-Fermit one, will have to check when the guys are back at work tomorrow (I gave them a day off :) )

Hi, Solar thermal not so big these days but a couple of Q for anyone who still works in it. Background. I'm an Electrician not a plumber.. I've been maintaining my otherwise excellent solar thermal (Original install MCS by Others), for the last ~ 18 years, over which time I've needed to clean...

Hi, We have solar panels for our hot water, so we have the main water tank in the airing cupboard, plus a small pressurised (I think) tank. The smaller one has been leaking for several years leaving rusty water on the outside & on towels in the cupboard. The system also keeps losing pressure...

Forgive my ignorance, with this basic question, but I seem to be struggling to both understand, search for, and source, the appropriate washer, o-ring or gland, for this type of tap. Maybe, no one ever replaces this type of washer/component? Background: I discovered a leak in the cupboard from...

Hi, Been meaning to ask this for a while now. Commercial leak detection fluid - the stuff in the hand-pump action spray bottle - it makes me cough and I feel a choking sensation at the back of my throat every time I use it. I keep well away from the thing I'm spraying, but I still get the...
