Hi all. Hope you are all good and are doing ok with work due to lockdown, self isolating etc.

What instruments did people purchase to comply with this bulletin?

I only paid £160 for a fluke 116 last year and now need to spend a lot more due to this bulletin.

I have had a fuse carrier lock and spur cover for years. I have a fluke multimeter and a plug in socket and see like BG use. You can do safe isolation with all of these. Ohh and a volt stick

Multimeters aren’t recommended to dead test for safe isolation anymore. It should be a test lamp or two pole voltage tester to GS38.

I don’t see why not there an approved electrical test device

think it’s another one of those people don’t know how to use them properly so they have kept it simple

That’s exactly what it is mate. That Is why BG used to give there lads the socket and see.

I’ve just read the document from hse (4th edition) which appears to have changed to possibly include multimeters? I distinctly remember it stating they shouldn’t be used, as the incorrect selection of range could be used, eg Vdc instead of Vac. It does however state must meet certain criteria. Maybe they changed it as people didn’t want to shell out on new equipment?

Didn’t want to shell out when there was no need to. Learn how to use a multi meter correctly. That’s where they should be focusing.

Proving electrically dead
Once the means of isolation has been identified and following the isolation of the equipment, it is vitally important the equipment is checked to ensure it is electrically dead before work commences. The use of an approved voltage indicator is required to prove that the equipment is dead; this could be a proprietary test lamp, or a two-pole voltage detector. The HSE recommends that a multi-meter is not used for proving dead (HSG85(2)).

Pretty much says what is said above in previous post about people selecting the wrong range with a multimeter so they should not be used. Hmmmm
