Connecting spout into mix tap

Hi. Just want to make sure I'm not gonna wreck something. I need to connect the spout to the mixer tap, put it's very difficult to push down into place. Is this normal? I've wound out the grub screw to ensure that it's not catching. Just didn't want to apply too much force pressing it down if I've missed something. The instructions are less than helpful and do not illustrate this at all.

A bit of lubricant on the O-rings, eg silicone grease, should help.
And maybe apply a little in/on the edge of the socket as well.

So, I don't need to remove the white rings? Or anything? My guess is that they stop the spout flapping about inside the housing.

You are right. The white rings act as the bearings for rotating the tap, and the o-rings provide the seal. Without the white bearings the spout will flap about and the o-rings will wear out quickly!
If when inserting the spout the white rings are whats stopping it going in, you should try squeezing each ring closed as you push the spout in.

I've got it down to the last 3mm, but it's really tight. I've sprayed some silicone grease on the male and female sections. I'm just wondering if I should have assembled it before fitting to the bath.

Is it stiff to push in, but turns all right, or is it stiff to turn now? If the latter, something seems wrong! Are they definitely the correct size o-rings?
PS I have read that silicone spray contains mostly petroleum solvent which can harm real rubber (though your o-rings are probably not rubber anyway), so I use plumbers silicone grease from a tube. That's probably irrelevant to this problem!

Does the middle handle positioning have any bearing on the seating of the spout? Can't quite tell from the photos.

Hi. I ended up removing the tap from the bath, so that could push it home under greater control, without the risk of damaging something.
