Hi all.

So for some reason I started to get a random banging in what I believe to be my cold water pipes.

There’s a clunk noise coming from what sounds like the stop tap/ water meter area every time I turn off the cold water taps in the house.

But also we get the same noise coming randomly throughout the day and night.
If water is running somewhere else like washing machine or toilet filling then there is no noise when shutting off taps.

I’ve tried draining the water from the system and turning down the stop tap to try and reduce pressure but nothing seems to be helping.

Any have any ideas on anything else I could try or what it could be?

Thanks.

Turning down your stopcock will not reduce pressure only flow. You may have a fault on your stopcock, but if your getting it when nothing is used then it could be water hammer noise transferring from a neighbouring property. Closing your taps - sounds like you have 1/4 turns, which are prone to this if done too quickly. Also you may have loose pipework.

Thanks for your reply.

So the first thing I should to is see if my neighbors are having a problem too.

Then try change the stop tap.

Yeah it’s not so much the turning off of the taps that’s bothering me it’s the banging through the day and night at random times that’s driving me mad.

Thanks.
