voltage

Voltage, electric potential difference, electric pressure or electric tension is the difference in electric potential between two points, which (in a static electric field) is defined as the work needed per unit of charge to move a test charge between the two points. In the International System of Units, the derived unit for voltage (potential difference) is named volt.: 166  In SI units, work per unit charge is expressed as joules per coulomb, where 1 volt = 1 joule (of work) per 1 coulomb (of charge). The old SI definition for volt used power and current; starting in 1990, the quantum Hall and Josephson effect were used, and recently (2019) fundamental physical constants have been introduced for the definition of all SI units and derived units.: 177f, 197f  Voltage or electric potential difference is denoted symbolically by

Δ
V

{\displaystyle \Delta V}
, simplified V, or U, for instance in the context of Ohm's or Kirchhoff's circuit laws.
Electric potential differences between points can be caused by the build up of electric charge (e.g., a capacitor), and from an electromotive force (e.g., electromagnetic induction in generator, inductors, and transformers). On a macroscopic scale, a potential difference can be caused by electrochemical processes (e.g., cells and batteries), the pressure-induced piezoelectric effect, and the thermoelectric effect.
A voltmeter can be used to measure the voltage (or potential difference) between two points in a system. Often a common reference potential such as the ground of the system is used as one of the points. A voltage can represent either a source of energy or the loss, dissipation, or storage of energy.

    Fuel pump voltage at 80volts

Hi, just fitted a new fuel pump and control unit to my ecotherm boiler but I still can’t get any fuel to the top of the pump, nothing coming out of the bleed screw but definitely fuel in the bottom of the pump. I checked the voltage to the pump and it’s only 80volts but there is 240volts going...

Voltage for Nest E Heat Link in the UK

Can anyone confirm that a 240v central heating wall thermostat can be replaced by the Nest E Heat Link? According to Google, the wiring needs to be low voltage so it will not work but I have seen a few comments in forums that the European version is different to the US version and does work at...

Biasi Combi troubleshooting voltage at pcb

I am having problems with my old Biasi Riva 32 He combi. I am getting an ntc flue temp sensor lockout error code. I had a spare sensor and replaced it. The spare was used (from a previous time the boiler was throwing up error codes) but was not broken and the resistance checked out ok. The...

    Sterling 40 coil voltage

Hi all, Had a quick look at a sterling 40 this evening. There was no oil going to nozzle but definitely oil in the pump. I checked the voltage going to the coil and its 80volts. Is that enough to open the valve? Didn't have magnet to stick on it to see if it would run. All your input appreciated.

Multimeter & Single Wire (DUMB QUESTION ALERT)

Can you test voltage on a single wire using a multimeter? If so, how? I know this sounds like a dumb question but, say I want to find out the common wire on a cylinder stat. Do I just put one probe on the single wire? (I don't have anything I can test here at home...)

    No/low coil voltage

I'm struggling with my R.B.L G5BF 50/70 burner. I have got plenty of oil from the pressure port of the pump (brand new last year) but nothing from the outlet to the nozzle, passed the stem valve. There is no magnetism from the coil when you wave a screwdriver near it. So, I've changed the...

Glowworm 24hxi fan voltage/ boiler dead in the water?

Greetings one and all. I have been asked to look at a central heating system. The boiler is not firing so I did some tests. It's a standard Y plan system open vented. The boiler is getting the switched live feed from the three port valve OK. However the pump live out from the boiler is dead and...

3 port keeping the heating on?

Long story short. Changed a 3 port which is now sending 80v to the boiler switch live once the heating is turned on then off, so it fires all the time. Works as it should on the hot water. Valve Mi says that's what it should be doin. Is there a valve out there that cuts the voltage off...
