rust
Rust is an iron oxide, a usually reddish-brown oxide formed by the reaction of iron and oxygen in the catalytic presence of water or air moisture. Rust consists of hydrous iron(III) oxides (Fe2O3·nH2O) and iron(III) oxide-hydroxide (FeO(OH), Fe(OH)3), and is typically associated with the corrosion of refined iron.
Given sufficient time, any iron mass, in the presence of water and oxygen, could eventually convert entirely to rust. Surface rust is commonly flaky and friable, and provides no passivational protection to the underlying iron, unlike the formation of patina on copper surfaces. Rusting is the common term for corrosion of elemental iron and its alloys such as steel. Many other metals undergo similar corrosion, but the resulting oxides are not commonly called "rust".Several forms of rust are distinguishable both visually and by spectroscopy, and form under different circumstances. Other forms of rust include the result of reactions between iron and chloride in an environment deprived of oxygen. Rebar used in underwater concrete pillars, which generates green rust, is an example. Although rusting is generally a negative aspect of iron, a particular form of rusting, known as stable rust, causes the object to have a thin coating of rust over the top, and if kept in low relative humidity, makes the "stable" layer protective to the iron below, but not to the extent of other oxides such as aluminium oxide on aluminium.
I get orange spots when washing clothes. Please see photo. I think it is rust.
I’ve checked there’s no metal in the machine. I have also run a long wash with lemon juice. Neither have solved it.
I read power flushing is the answer to rust elsewhere in the system.
How can I tell...
I've spotted this rust patch on the outside of a cast iron radiator in the house.
There's no sign of any water leaking from it on the floor, however when I put my finger on it, I couldn't say it was bone dry.
Any advice on what I should do to try and resolve this? I'm a bit fearful of...
What’s the correct way to replace a (jammed and leaking) stop-cock in an old and corroded ½ steel pipe without damaging the pipe?
The pipe in question is a main water supply pipe for a house and dates from (I guess) the 1970s. It’s from a shared supply for myself and the neighbouring half dozen...
Hi,
I had a new radiator fitted around a month back and I've noticed the joints which are sealed with Hemp (or modern equivalent / Boss White appear to be slightly discoloured / rusty. This might simply be a little seepage before the joint sealed etc as there is not weeping from the joint that...
New to the site. I'm a homeowner and I have no knowledge about plumbing, so thought someone else may be able to advise?
In the early hours of Monday morning I had a leak under my kitchen sink. I think the noise must have woken me, so it thankfully I was able to get my father in law over to...
The customer dosen't want to change the cast iron bath but it has rust around the plug waste hole. It dosent look good and is difficult to clean.
I've suggested touching up the bath with some repair enamel paint but now am not sure which product to use. Some of the product reviews are not good...
Hi, getting dirty water through the taps in my upstairs bathroom but when I run the tap downstairs in the kitchen it is clear. Have a combi boiler so no storage tank. Have ran the cold tap for over 30 mins and it's still the same. Any ideas on what could be causing it?
Cheers

I recently changed the plate hex on my combi, and want to keep the old one for a spare for the future - just in case. However, the reason I swapped it was because it's got lots of rust flakes in it from my 55 year old system. Filter now fitted.
I thought of leaving the hex for a few months...
Hi All,
My first post, so please be kind. :-) I have a mains fed electric shower. The shower head got clogged up with green 'rust'. Copper corrosion I guess? I ran the shower without the head on and lots came out and continues to. I guess I could fill a thimble with the stuff after a few...

Hi
Hoping somebody will be able to help with a problem with my pipework.
I am in the middle of renovating a house and have replaced all my pipe with new copper piping. Everything seems ok except for the hot water in the bathroom sink. When I turn the tap on the water runs brown for about a...
Hello,
I've just noticed a small rusty spot on my bathroom ceiling which is leaking water. It's leaking quite slowly, about 5ml an hour. I live in a flat so assume the leak must be a result of the upstairs flat's bathroom.
Is it my responsibility to call a plumber or should I inform the...
We had a new boiler put in a few months ago. I'm questioning if the fitter put inhibitor in?
It's a Worcestor boiler which heats up water in our hot water tank and radiators etc etc. From my understanding there's two circuits? Once from the boiler around the radiators and one going up to the...

My neighbour has just started lighting her open fire with back boiler for the first time in 3 years.
She now finds she cannot turn off the hot water tap properly as the sediment from the boiler has stopped the washer seating properly. I have flushed it twice in two days but it is still...
