mixing valve

A thermostatic mixing valve (TMV) is a valve that blends hot water with cold water to ensure constant, safe shower and bath outlet temperatures, preventing scalding.
The storage of water at high temperature removes one possible breeding ground for Legionella; the use of a thermostat, rather than a static mixing valve, provides increased safety against scalding, and increased user comfort, because the hot-water temperature remains constant. Many TMVs use a wax thermostat for regulation. They also shut off rapidly in the event of a hot or cold supply failure to prevent scalding or thermal shock.
It is increasingly common practice around the world to regulate the storage water temperature to above 60 °C (140 °F), and to circulate or distribute water at a temperature less than 50 °C (122 °F). Water above these temperatures can cause scald injuries. Many countries, states, or municipalities now require that the temperature of all bath water in newly built and extensively refurbished domestic properties be controlled to a maximum of 48 °C (118 °F). Installing thermostatic mixing valves can ensure that water is delivered at the required temperature, thereby reducing the risk of scalding accidents; it also reduces hot water consumption from a supply that is maintained at a higher temperature. There are three main categories for water temperature controlling devices: Heat Source, Group Control, and Point-of-Use.

Heat SourceThese are used with central heating systems that use water as a medium.

Tempering valves for use on hot water heat distribution systems
High flow rates suitable for use in under floor (radiant) heating applications
Allows water to be stored at a higher temperatureGroup ControlThese provide a uniform distribution temperature for all hot water outlets in a household.

Designed for multi-point applications
High flow rates (from 14 to 51 US gallons per minute (53 to 193 l/min) at 45 pounds per square inch (3.1 bar))
Temperature stabilityPoint-of-UseThese are single Outlet Thermostatic Mixing Valves, often called "thermostatic faucets", "thermostat taps" or "thermostat valves".

Designed for single point applications, such as individual showering, hand wash basin mixers, bath or tub fillers
High level protection against scalding and thermal shockAlthough other temperature regulating valves exist, thermostatic mixing valves are the preferred type in health care facilities, as they limit maximum outlet temperature, regardless of pressure or flow.

UFH with Capillary Type Mixing Valve

Do people with this type of mixed flow temperature control have any problems with achieving the required manifold flow temperature? The one below I think is similar to the TIO Mixing unit. In the unit below, the hot (boiler) water enters from the bottom left, red arrow, up through the "mixing...

    Adding Thermostatic Mixing Valve

I have NuHeat UFH system, and this has no Thermostatic Blending valve on the heating circuit. (Heat Master II cylinder has pick up coil) Nu-Heat System installed - This means I can't run store above 60C due to risk of overheating UFH pipes. I want to add a Thermostatic Mixing valve so have...

UFH mixing valve bypassing hot water directly to cold return

I have a UFH manifold from Wundatrade with a Grundfos pump. The pump feed has a mixing valve which has a hot inlet from the thermal store, and a cold inlet from the return manifold. In-between the mixing valve cold inlet and the return manifold, is a tee which returns the cold water to the...

Ufh mixing valve and boiler flow temperature

Hi, I have a combi boiler that supplies hot water to two ufh manifolds. We only have ufh and no radiators. I am trying to find the most efficient way to heat our home. What would your recommendations be on the following ways to set our system up. A) Set the ufh mixer to max so it isn't doing...

    Underfloor heating mixing valve issues

We’ve had a UFH system installed as part of our home renovation which is run alongside our existing radiators. Some of it is in rooms with LVT flooring which means we’ve got to be careful with water temperature (floor temp limits are set, but can easily overshoot if water is too hot). Our...

    DHW Mixing Valve Output Fluctuates

Our building has a boiler that provides both hydronic heat and domestic hot water. It's been working without any serious problems for 10+ years. The DHW is heated via a coil and goes through a Holby mixing valve, which a few months back had a problem with the mix exceeding the maximum safe...

URGENT What type of valve is this 3 port valve with mixing valve

I have a 3 way rough in valve. The first valve has both hot and cold run to it. The second valve controls the shower head and the third valve controls the tub faucet. What is the name of this rough in valve as I’m having a hell of a time finding one. Thanks to all in advance

How to get thermostatic mixing valve to seal

I fitted a thermostatic mixing valve under a bath (first time outside of training) but can’t seem to get the larger inner connector to seal. It’s got a rubber gasket that I’ve checked is lined up but am still getting a tiny seep of water when fully tightened. Is it ok to add Jet blue or LSX to...

    Mixing valve broken?

Moved in recently and inherited a combi boiler with 2 zones setup, one to the rads all around the house and a second to the underfloor heating in the kitchen. When the kitchen zone is activated, the boiler kicks in, the flow pipe heats as expected and the heat only travels through the pipework...

Need for Mixing Valve out outlet from the DHW tank

Hi all, the heating system in a bungalow that uses an Air to Water heat pump has a TMV (thermostatic mixing valve) at the outlet from the DHW tank. It is a gravity system. While the shower is pumped and there is no bath, the TMV is likely to impact on the flow to the WHB and Kitchen sink. Can...
