damp
Structural dampness is the presence of unwanted moisture in the structure of a building, either the result of intrusion from outside or condensation from within the structure.
A high proportion of damp problems in buildings are caused by ambient climate dependent factors of condensation and rain penetration. Capillary penetration of fluid from the ground up through concrete or masonry is known as "rising damp" and is governed by the shape and porosity of the construction materials through which this evaporation limited capillary penetration takes place. Structural damp, regardless of the mechanisms through which it takes place, is exacerbated by higher levels of humidity.
Hi all,
This is what the garage walls look like. Pictures were taken today. A couple of days ago the thick damp strip near the ceiling wasn't there, just the thin ones around the blocks, so it seems it is worsening.
The external tap was removed a couple of weeks ago as it was badly leaking and...

Hi,
Just joined - and would really appreciate some help with the following.
I've been living in my house for about 15 years - no major plumbing issues. Earlier on this year, I noted avery small amount of water coming up through my wood flooring in my sitting room, in between the 'joins'.
Now...
Dont know if this is a plumber issue, however, I am not sure which way to go next with it. I have a horrible damp/mouldy smell in my kitchen coming from one wall. It is a false wall and I have cut an inspection hole the smell is strong behind it. The wall covers the old kitchen wall. The floor...
Hi guys, I was wondering if you could provide some guidance dealing with a very difficult situation I'm in.
Some of you helped me with another issue (broken drain pipe) here:

Went to a private job today - no hot water. Turned up and was shown to the cupboard inside the bathroom where the cylinder and cistern reside - WOW!
The only extractor fan in the room is not working.
No vents on the cupboard
Fused spurs damaged from condensation and both rusted and blown
Both...
Hello,
I'm unsure if this is boiler related but I have a damp patch on the outside wall and I have been topping up my boiler more often than I think is necessary. The cold water pressure seem to lessen occasionally too. There are no signs of any damp inside, under the kitchen units as I have...
Hi there
Can you please help - our builder seems to have little knowledge of buildings regulations so we are struggling with our extension/conversion.
We are converting part of an internal garage plus existing room into a new kitchen. Problem is there are 2 different floor heights for the new...

Hi, I have recently purchased a repossessed house which seems to have been empty for about a year. I have an issue that the water pipes under the kitchen sink seem to have turned black and are giving off a damp musty smell which is quite strong. The cupboard was filled with dirt and mould which...
Hi All , I've just bought a house and the downstairs toilet stinks of a damp smell. After a lot of destruction I found the source. The sink is set in a "boxed in" vanity type thing which I want to remove and the waste pipe drains in to what looks like a open sewer. There is mould and rat/mouse...
ive came across a problem as the house i had removed radiators from to let the customer redecorate, found rising damp in the walls.
the company have stripped the plaster and put up a membrane to stop the damp coming through,
they are in the middle of plastering over the membrane but they are...
Hi All
We have a small shower room downstairs that smells of damp.
It has a shower, toilet and wash-basin.
The walls and floor are tiled; the ceiling is plasterboard.
There is an extractor fan in the ceiling that takes the air into the eaves upstairs (via a flexible duct)
One of the walls is...

Good afternoon all. Several weeks ago I noticed a damp patch either side of a close coupled Twyfords WC that we have in our shower room. I have been unable to determine where the dampness in the tile grouting on the floor is coming from. I have looked carefully on several occasions but I...
Hi everyone - I am looking for some advice as a first time buyer.
I am currently mid-way through purchasing a bungalow built 1965. When i viewed the property I knew there was some damp in the bedroom and slight mould growth on the wall and the agent advised this was from condensation as the...

Came back home today to find a damp patch of carpet inan upstairs room. Some of this has leaked through into the room below.
Anyone got any ideas? There are no appliances etc in the room, just a spare bed. Could it be a burst pipe, or a sign of one to come? I thought water would gush out and...

Hi all, I have recently fitted a new bathroom suite for a customer and sited the thermostatic shower on the shared wall with next door. The bathroom pre fitting was an absolute disgrace with cracked tiles, mildew and a leaking bath. 8 months later I have received a call from the customer saying...
