To seal a central heating system or not?

Good morning everyone, I have a big old vicarage which needs a new regular boiler. They also want fancy mixer taps in the kitchen . They have two hot water cylinders linked together, a shower pump and curved old radiators in the bay windows. I'm agonizing over what to do. The easiest option is...

Suspected leaking pipe in concrete floor

Dear All, I need a second opinion. I have a customer with an engineered oak floor which keeps discolouring apparently from damp below. The floor is in the corner of a cloakroom and near to central heating pipes. When the floor is lifted it does not appear to be soaking wet. I suspect a pinhole...

    Three Port Valve Puzzle

Evening All, I changed a Drayton three port valve today as the valve was completely seized. It appears to be wired correctly. When I switch to HW it moves to HW and when I switch to Mid it moves to Mid. But when I switch to Heating it clicks repeatedly, the small lever on the actuator stays in...

    Sign Writing on vans

Good afternoon eveyone, I've never bothered to have my vans sign written - mainly because I know so many tradesmen who've had them broken into. I feel (rightly or wrongly) that it's like painting "Rob Me!" on the side. Possibly I'm being paranoid. Can anyone persuade me it's a good idea? Jock

    http://www.onlineboilermanuals.com/

Does anyone know what's happened to the onlineboilermanuals website? I subscribed to it and it's been really useful for finding technical information at customers' houses when they've lost their manuals.

    Plumbers working their evenings

Evening All, I've just spoken to someone who wanted me to call around one evening this week to fit an electric shower which he's bought. He told me he works during the day. I told him I work nine till five - like everyone else. I don't want to work my evenings so I wouldn't budge. It set me...

Linking oil fired central heating to a wood burning stove

Hi Everyone, I've been asked to install a new oil fired central heating system and link it to a wood burning stove. It's in a bungalow refurb and the customer has an unlimited supply of wood. I'm very skeptical of it all working. It seems to me the choice is between a thermal store, H2 panel...

    Van Guard Pipe Carrier

Hi Everyone, I'm curious - I recently bought a Van Guard Tube Carrier and I'm really disappointed with it. Quite simply it isn't waterproof. If it rains the tube is soaked the whole length and any copper tube inside is tarnished after only a day or so. Has anyone got the same tube carrier and...

    Working with fibre glass insulation

Evening all, I've spent a lot of time working in attics recently and have had a terrible time with fibre glass insulation getting into my clothes and causing irritation. I've washed one jacket three times and it still itches. Does anyone have any advice on what to wear? I always wear a mask...

3/8 square head, long T bar stopcock key

HI Guys, Does anyone know where I can buy a 3/8 square head, long T bar stopcock key? My village has quite a few smaller valves in the street and I'm sick of having to call out the water company every time I need to fix a stopcock.

    Lockshield Valve Key

Does anyone make a lockshield valve key (like a bleed valve key)? I'm sick of using an adjustable - a proper key would be much better.

    Secondary Circulation - switching on/off

Hi Guys, I'm planning a disabled bathroom for an incontinent child with severe problems. The client has specified secondary circulation as it's 20m from the unvented cylinder and they don't want to have to wait for the hot to arrive. Rather than put it on a single channel timer and have it...

    Scrap Metal Permit

Does anyone know the law on carrying waste metal from plumbing jobs to scrap yards? I know that the new law requires me to provide a photo ID and be paid for scrap metal by BACS or cheque (not cash). However I am worried that if I am not registered to carry scrap my van insurance would be...

    De-sludging central heating systems

Has anyone out there got a practical, affordable method of de-sludging central heating systems? I've tried everything. I've hired four different makes of powerflush machines, I've tried all the makes of detergent, I've fitted three different types of magnetic filter but I always come back to...

    Lead rising main

I have a rising main coming into a kitchen which is weeping around where it emerges from the concrete. The pipe is lead which has been sweated onto copper above. I suspect the pipe is cracked at the surface of the concrete. Bearing in mind the current regs what's the best way to fix this?

    Electrical fault advice needed

I'd just finished a bathroom this afternoon and was walking out the door when the downstairs lighting circuit tripped and refused to re-set. I had just finished swapping the room thermostat so Im worried it's more than a co-incidence. It's a newish house so I don't think I've drilled a cable...

    Bidding for work

I just wondered how other people have found sites like 'Rated People'. I recently signed up to try and generate some more business but I'm very sceptical. I've paid for three jobs - when I rang the first customer (immediately) he had already got someone. The second customer said he'd ring back...
